Why Trading Olli Is NOT The End Of The World
Trading Captain Olli Jokinen Is Not The End Of The World If....:1. Both Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton do indeed step in and become strong top-4 Defensemen as projected (Ballard with Bouwmeester and Boynton with Bryan Allen.) Suddenly the Panthers have one of the deepest D rosters in hockey and Ballard could well continue to grow into an All Star. Plus his puck moving skills is fills one of the Cats greatest needs and recent major weaknesses.
2. If that frees up the money (Ollis salary added to cap space) for a quality scoring free agent.
3. Repeat parenthesis from #2 AND helps lock Jay into a long term deal, then the trade might not have been panic button slapper, but the catalyst for FINALLY getting some progress on being a legitimate contender.
Considerations For Justifying The Trading Of Olli:1. The knock on Olli has been that he has never led the Panthers to the playoffs. There are numerous reasons why you cant hang all that on him, but just look at Ovechkin or any other leader that single handedly took their teams to the next level. Stanley Cup contenders dont just need good Captains; they need great Captains whose actions can turn a game and the team around.
2. Your Number 1 paid guy needs to be the Number 1 guy. Olli was the leading scorer, but last season there were many nights he wasnt the best player on the ice, or even on the number-1 line (was often the emerging Horton-Weiss-Booth line.) The team may have developed to the point Olli was no longer in his proper role. Hes not expected to be leading scorer in Phoenix but theyll be thrilled if he is, nor will he be Captain. Hes simply expected to play like a first line center and hell be given some excellent line mates. Expect a tremendous season from Olli. Which leads me to.........
3. That horrific night in Buffalo last February. Right after getting over the initial shock of seeing Zednik skate off in a trail of blood, my second thought after concern for his life was no lie here Olli. I looked at my wife and said, I hope this doesnt ruin Olli. That was a traumatic moment that he admitted haunted his nightmares making from many nights of unrest. Add that to the stress over trade rumors (remember this happened just after the trade deadline) and amidst rumors of a growing rift with Coach/GM Martin. Thats a lot of weight for anyone to carry. During that final stretch I seriously wondered if Olli wasnt done in Florida and if a fresh start wasnt needed. I didnt want to admit it, but I believe its true. Now he has it in Phoenix. I hope he has a great season. I hope Cats fans cheer him from afar. I hope the first three things listed above come true.
Thanks for the memories Olli!

What others are saying
- Ya'll don't know jackThis team will never be great until Martin is gone. We need a GM who is aggressive and makes smart deals, not just deal anyone who he doesn't get along with.
- What does a Rangers fan know?So I see wisdom from "Ranger Joe." Another know it all New Yorker blessing us with their all knowing sports perspective? Those D were NOT enough for Olli!
- If Horton and Weiss can stay healthy enough to play 70-80 games while stepping it up and earning their big contracts, then the Panthers shouldn't see it's scoring decrease. I'm a beleiver that you build your team from the net out, and getting two reliable defensemen makes their core defense much, much better.
- I'm not going to be niceAnother team gets rid of its star player, that's our teams for ya. When are we ever going to GET a star player? Looks like Dwayne Wade is next since he's the only real superstar left around here. A successful seaon in this town is like a Hurricane. When it's over we start rebuilding.
- Enough failureI am so sick of South Florida sports teams' fan whinning about players who never lead their teams to anything being traded. Get over it! Trades are a part of every sport. You can send the whole team to Columbus if the guys we get back give us some playoff Hockey. It's getting harder and harder to get excited when we lack that one guy who lights up the night with true amazing play. When will they get a true young Superstar to give us our money's worth?
- Adios OlliSure Olli was a fan favorite for a lot of years, but something had to change. The Panthers have been in arguably the weakest division in the NHL since realignment and just haven't been able to get into the playoffs for sometime now. I'm not sure that the players that Florida acquired for Olli are the keys to make the playoffs but by freeing up some mula, they can certainly position themselves to find a diamond in the rough and build on their talented youth for a playoff run next year...or not. I'll still root for them as long as they're not playing Pittsburgh!
- Olli - Friom "C" to "C-Ya"OK, so Olli is the Panthers all-time leader in goals, points, assists, game winning goals and consecutive games played. However, The Panthers haven't made the playoffs for seven straight seasons, and Olli has only seen late-April icetime once - as a rookie, playing only 8 games for L.A. You need a leader who has 'been there' and can instill a sense of urgency in younger players (yes, Crosby got the "C" w/o playoff experience at the time, but no one there doubted the inevitable0. Nothing sells like success in an NHL lockerroom. With new coach DeBoer, a new on-ice leader can make all the difference. So, Olli, enjoy Phoenix, and remember - "it's a dry heat."
- PanthersWhat's up fellow Panthers fan? I think we all were in denial and hated to think about losing Jokinen. However, I agree with you. Sometimes you need a fresh group of players and a strong D is always a great start!
